Amelia Higgs

Principal Lawyer

Amelia Higgs is a Principal Lawyer in Dobson Mitchell Allport’s Family & Relationships team, specialising in family law matters.

She works with clients across complex and often sensitive matters, including high risk parenting disputes, complex property settlements, surrogacy arrangements and Binding Financial Agreements.  Amelia is a strong advocate for resolving matters outside of court where possible, using mediation and collaborative approaches to achieve practical outcomes.  Where litigation is required, she appears regularly in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

Amelia is known for her clear communication and pragmatic approach, helping clients understand complex issues and focus on workable solutions.  She provides steady guidance during what can be a challenging time, balancing empathy with frank and practical advice.

She is regularly appointed by the Court as an Independent Children’s Lawyer, representing the interests of children in contested parenting matters.

Amelia is the current President of the Law Society of Tasmania and has served on its Council since 2021. She also sits on the board of Dress for Success Tasmania, coordinates family law training at the Centre for Legal Studies, and is a community ambassador for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Outside of work, Amelia enjoys gardening, bushwalking and reading.  She is also a dedicated participant in the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s Frocktober fundraiser, having raised more than $47,000 since 2022.
