We are pleased to be able to offer work experience opportunities to law students in their final year of study.
It is important to us that we are able to provide law students with the opportunity to experience everyday life in legal practice. Students undertaking work placement with us will be provided with a tailored program designed to ensure they are exposed to all aspects of our organisation, along with opportunities to experience any areas of law which are of particular interest to them.
Candidates for work placement are expected to have completed their penultimate year of study and be due to commence, or be in, their last year of study for a Bachelor or Laws. Applicants who do not meet these criteria will usually not be considered.
We are not able to offer work experience to high school or pre-tertiary students.
Due to the demand for placements, and so that we can ensure sufficient work opportunities are available, our undergraduate placements are for one-week blocks. We may choose to extend that period in our discretion, depending on the level of interest in placements.
We offer one-week placements within the following dates each year:
- 2 x 1 week placements in the last two weeks of January
- 1 x 1 week placement in the September mid-semester break; and
- 2 x 1 week placements in November/December after exams have concluded.
Additionally, we offer positions to trainees in the Tasmanian Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice (GDLP) course. Placements will ordinarily be determined by the Centre for Legal Studies in conjunction with us.
Students undertaking their GDLP at institutions other than the Tasmanian Centre for Legal Studies should contact our Office Manager to enquire about opportunities to undertake all or part of their practical experience component at DMA.
Application Dates and Information
Applications for placement in January will be taken between 1 September and 10 September.
Applications for placement in either September or November/December will be taken between 1 June and 10 June.
Applications made outside these dates will generally not be given consideration.
Before applying, applicants should familiarise themselves with our areas of practice. Priority will be given to applicants who have a genuine interest in forging a legal career in Tasmania after graduation.
Applicants should provide a covering letter, a CV of no more than 3 pages including two referees, and an academic transcript. Applicants should clearly state in their covering letter which placements dates they would like to be considered for, and any areas of law which they are particularly interested in. Receipt of all applications will be confirmed by email and offers of placement made as soon as practicable after the closure of the application period.
